Description
I've been wanting to try a "mirror glaze" cake for a while, so when I got the Threadcakes email, I jumped at the chance. "A SCENE FROM MARS" seemed like the perfect design for this type of cake. I recruited my talented friend Akemi and we got together on the morning of my birthday to bake a (not birthday but sort of birthday) cake :D
I used a yellow boxed cake mix (if it ain't broke, don't fix it!) and made a simple vanilla buttercream. After filling the cake and putting on a crumb coat, into the freezer it went. The mountains were made with a rough chocolate transfer technique, and that went smoothly. The glaze went... less smoothly. Having never made it before, I didn't know what to expect! It was a combo of corn syrup, granulated sugar, unflavored gelatin, condensed milk, and white chocolate, and it was thick and sticky. Make that SUPER FREAKIN' STICKY. While Akemi made an amazing little moon man with fondant, I wrestled with the gelatin mix. In the end, we successfully wrangled the glaze, which we poured in colored bands over the chocolate "mountains" that acted like dividers (inefficient dividers)... Clean up was NOT fun, but after a dash of gold sugar sprinkles, the cake looked so good that we decided it was all worth it!
The cake was consumed that night after some unnecessary birthday song singing -- the consensus was "yum!"
