wave cake by Charon Knight

Description

My first Threadcakes entry! (But not my last!). I wanted to find a design that spoke to me and one I could fashionably wear. My second purpose in decorating a cake was to bring awareness for pancreatic cancer, since it is the deadliest cancer with a 92% mortality rate and has recently hit close to home. I looked through the thousands of photos and stopped looking when I saw Waves. The fierce Waves by Anggrahito resounded in me like the diagnosis this year of pancreatic cancer in my mother. I felt overwhelmed. I saw this unexpected beast rising out of nowhere, savagely taking over. I started with a deadline in mind, November 17th is National Pancreatic Awareness Day and wanted to publish then. So I started 4 days before getting my board ready, making ganache, fondant and buttercream. I didn't want a lot of supports in my cake and tried to make everything as edible as possible. I wanted mostly cake, so I stayed away from rice krispy treats, too. So internally there is one threaded rod with 6 nuts and washers, straws and cake boards. I covered the rod with a straw and Glad Clingwrap to keep it food safe. I also decided to marble the cake with vanilla and chocolate cake. I wanted the inside to appear as tumultuous as the outside. So I stacked the 8 inch cakes and used the 6 inch cakes for the head. I carved it all down and used the cake scrapes to make cake pop dough and build receding waves. I ganached and then covered with fondant. Then the detail work came. Lots of detail and texturing. I airbrushed color on adding layers and shades. I also used petal dusts. The eyes are hard candies that I melted down and then had to cut to be sized according to his head. By accident I found that pulling the melted candy made great whiskers. The background is not attached and I moved it around for photos. It was just airbrushed on poster board. And I finished on time! It felt good to cut that beast!
