I decided to make Spug, as a fan of Star Trek and pugs it was a no-brainer. I printed off pictures of pugs from different angles, pug paws, even a pug dressed as Spock (which wasn't as useful as you might think!) I also had an array of pug calendars and greetings cards, because my friends and family think I'm obsessed with pugs..pfft.. well I might be a teeny bit. I decorated all these references and photos of joy in the only place in my house that gets light, in the bay window of my kitchen. You see November in the UK is dark about 70% of the time, the few days I worked on the cake were spent either trying to make use of the little light I had coming in from the garden or working by lamp light after 4pm. The trickiest part was making sure I made him the right colour, I kept dashing from room to room with cake mix and sugarpaste trying to see what the actual colour was!
The rules said little or no structure so I went basic; stick through the middle and a thin board with straws halfway to support his big ol' head. Aside from his front paws which are rice crispy treats, he is all cake....green cake. Well, he's Vulcan so they have green blood! (NERD ALERT). I made four deep 8" round green madeira cakes, with a buttercream filling. He is also white chocolate ganached to help support the diagonal angle of the cake. The design has a variety of textures, the face and paws are highly detailed but the clothing is matt, so I decided to use modelling chocolate to sculpt the face and paws, and sugarpaste for the clothes. To complete the cake I covered two boards to create the backdrop and painted the stars for the background.
The highlights of this cake for me were putting the hair on, made me and my other half laugh a lot, there's something about a pug in a Spock wig that just cracks me up. Also, painting him was a lot of fun. The cake was made over three days, when lighting permitted. It was really sad to cut into him, I felt a bond with this little guy. My other half is making his way through most of the cake, I asked him for a comment and he said 'Out of this world.' He also thinks he's very funny. I will be giving the face piece to my friend to freak her out.
Live long and prosper,
