Robin Redbreast cake by Michelle Jubb-Peni

Description

Threadcakes thanks so much for a cool competition. I am Michelle a stay at home mum of two from Australia and a homebaker. This is my first ever cake comp and my third 3d cake. About a month ago I made my first 3d cake and really found a new passion.
I found out about Threadcakes the Sunday before the original closing date of the comp so I looked through the designs and had some ideas once they extended the entry time I had a short list that continued to change and evolve as I would have time to execute something else. I decided I would chose something I already had supplies for as I didn't really have extra money to invest in New colour or structures. I had narrowed my decision to six designs and being indecisive I put them in a hat and got my 1yr old to pick and out came Robin.
I created the structure from wood, steel rods and nuts and steel wire. The wood was covered with foil and the metal covered with plastic wrap and straws then melted marshmallow to make sure it was secure and covered well.
SWEET STUFF
Cake was butter cake with dollops of homemade strawberry jam, filling was caramel sauce then coated with chocolate ganache. Robins arms and legs were made with rice crispy treats. He was then covered in homemade marshmallow fondant.
As I constructed Robin I wish I had more choice of cake tins and something in a better size I had to cut and fit the cake as I went, wasn't the best choice I should have thought this through and threaded the cake as I constructed the support system.(I will remember that next time) once the cake was in I coated him in chocolate ganache. The final steps I added the fondant in sections and airbrushed pieces prior to going on to him except for his main suit. The last thing was his hands which were made of modelling chocolate

In total from drawing ,baking, cinstructing and finishing he took me around 8hrs over two days thankfully it cooled down a bit as the night I baked the cakes and made the ganache the chocolate was soft and almost melted on its own I believe it was 28oC in the house at 10pm.

My uncle and aunty came over to cut Robin my uncle helped my oldest son to cut Robin up. It was so yummy we all had seconds. The One year old took a little while to try the Cake I don't think he realised it was cake inside and looked very confused when he did have some there was no stopping him.
