Description
After hearing about the contest and choosing a design, I collaborated with my wonderful mom, a fellow cake decorating enthusiast, about making our threadcake. Our original design was "Solitary Dream Pt2", but after several hours into making our cake, we had un-fixable structural problems, and had to abandon ship. Let's just say I had lots of cake on my hands. I didn't want to give up, so a new design was quickly chosen, new cakes baked, and we got into our new design.
I would say we spent about 4-5 hours on each cake design and we had more fun going through a failure and then a success, than if we had not failed at all.
The final cake is a 4 layer chocolate box mix with a light buttercream filling with apricot-pineapple preserves, covered in chocolate fondant. The aurora effects are made from royal icing and the horizon-scape is made from chocolate fondant. Mom and I are both on diets, so we didn't eat any cake. We'll be sure to find out how it tasted when a lucky recipient is chosen =)
