As I looked at all the designs, I feel in love with Liberty Soul and decided on a 2D design. I baked a small 6 inch round eggnog cake cuz it is the holiday season and I LOVE eggnog! I was so happy it turned out DELICIOUS! Of course my kids and I ate all the scraps first and then I got back to working on the cake. I then frosted and covered the cake in fondant and chilled it over night. The night before I baked, I made a template of the face to cut out the pieces I needed for the 2D image. The pieces of gumpaste dried for two days to ensure it was dry enough to paint on. I did carve the cake a bit so her face would stand away from the rest of the cake a bit. When I started to work on her face, the first thing I did was her bangs. My favorite part is the little wisp of hair right in the middle of her forehead. I rolled the thinnest piece of fondant to get that little wisp. Then, took out my painters pallet and used black and white gel paste with lemon extract to get the right consistency. My pallet was a gray mess by the end! I rolled out some black fondant and mixed a little tylose in and then hand cut the feathers. They were fun to make. I frilled them a little with a ball tool and then let them dry for a couple of hours on a flower dryer and then painted them. The braid was trial and error. I thought that would be the easiest part and it turned out to be the hardest to get right! LOL The whole project took around 11 hours total. Between household duties and kids wanting extra pieces of fondant I'm surprised it didn't take me longer! I had fun taking pictures of the process and turning this beautiful image into cake reality. Thank you Thread Cakes for the opportunity!
