I am so excited to find this contest! I can't bake at school so this has given me the chance to get back into the kitchen during the summer.
I think I got a bit too excited though 'cause this cake ended up being way harder then I thought! I spent at least a week working from when I got off work till 3 in the morning. It was hard but success was sweet! (Literally!)
So about the cake~
Before I ever started the cake I was trying to figure out how to make this three dimensional so I molded the sumo guys out of my lil bro's clay so I know what they look like from behind.
Once I started I used basic yellow cake because I didn’t have anyone specific to bake for and everyone loves a yummy yellow cake. My goal was to make a fondant free cake so I made a carved sumo cake and coated it by thickening candy melts and molding then carving them (once it hardened) into the right shape. I added the second cake as the sumo ring. I couldn't just leave it at that though so I thought, what if it wasn't really the last piece? What if its just that all the other sushi know better than to get into the ring? I used this concept to show all the others sushi pieces hiding under the sushi grass. They were probably my favorite thing because I named and gave all the different sushi personalities! (I know, I'm lame but it was 3 in the morning!)
My fondant free goals were foiled though when I discovered that they don’t have black candy melts during July! So I made their buns out of black fondant to keep them up. I also had trouble keeping the sumo guys up (their coating made them really heavy) so I used a small Tupperware container to keep them up.
Definitely not the most professional attempt but I loved every minute of it and can't wait to do it again!
Thankyou so much to threadcakes for hosting this contest. It let me combine my love of threadless, baking, and Japanese things together. I even got in some kanji practice! Your contest is educational, what could be better?
