Cow Puzzle cake by Jen Hillegass

Description

I saw this contest mentioned on my FAVORITE blog, cakewrecks, and thought, HEY! I think I'd like to give this a try. I had a lot of fun making my little cow cake. I worked on it over 3 days, usually after midnight. My husband selected marble cake and vanilla for the flavors. Before I could get to work, I had to get out my hideous vinyl table cloth. That has been a requirement for me for years, all crafts must be completed on a hideous floral tablecloth. They just come out better that way.

To honor Big Blackie from Charm City (RIP) I got out my big gun, the Kitchen aid to make my cake. No hander mix here. I made way more cake than I needed but better safe than sorry. I carved the cow shape using a template I found on a kids coloring website. The holes for the pieces were carved out using a gumpaste tool and a melon baller. I then rolled out pre-dyed fondant and covered the cake. The black detailing is piping gel and edible marker. The steak puzzle pieces are made from white fondant that I painted with icing color. That was my favorite part.

I'm looking forward to doing another entry and improving on my skills as I learned alot from this process. I chopped off a big piece for the Hubby to enjoy as soon as I was done- in the spirit of Ms. Weeza and the bleeding armadillo grooms cake.
