Shelf Life cake by Lindsey Pyne

Description

This is my second entry- it is the design I initially thought of when I heard of the contest, but I wasn't sure it would work. My brother actually has several shelves eerily similar to the one depicted. With his birthday coming up and my newfound confidence with fondant painting from my first entry, I had to do it.

It is pound cake with lemon icing covered in homemade fondant. I made the shelving veneer with marbled fondant, and then augmented the wood grain with paint. I used cake gel color and liqueur (last time I used regular rum, but this time I used 151- this cake ain't fooling around). For the shelf contents, I rolled little bits of fondant and painted them before cutting them out and putting them in place. I couldn't help adding the giant rat.

It took 8-9 hours over a couple of days (about 4 scary movies worth- yeay for MST3K!) to finish the cake.

When I brought it over, he was in the middle of tearing down a shed to make room for more weird stuff. It was delicious- although it was hard to figure out which curiosity to eat first!
