Polar Gardening cake by Samantha Przybylowicz

Description

We started this cake with a chocolate box cake, because who doesn’t love chocolate cake? We made three layers to give a good height to the cake and filled it with delicious vanilla buttercream. The cake was then covered in blue fondant, which we colored ourselves, and to which we added edible pearlescent shimmer to add a wintery snow-sparkle. Shimmery white fondant was then layered over the top and cut to look like snow drifts. We used rolled out gumpaste as a border around the bottom of the cake, onto which we drew really cool ice blocks to continue the polar theme.

The figurines were made out of various edible materials. The igloo was made out of gumpaste that dried over a round measuring cup. The Eskimo figurine was made out of a frame of gumpaste covered in marzipan and fondant. This proved to be challenging because the first Eskimo figurine was solely made out of marzipan, but his heavy head made him slowly begin to sag and become squished. The two husky dogs were made out of gumpaste covered in fondant and all the painting on all the figurines was done with powdered food coloring and vodka. The snowshoe rabbit was made out of gumpaste. The “polar garden” sign was made out of gumpaste and painted, while the birds were made out of colored gumpaste. The popsicles are also colored gumpaste on toothpicks, as are the trees. The seal is marzipan that we colored grey with food coloring and then painted with black details. The Eskimo on the back of the cake is made of marzipan and the fish are gumpaste. The only non-edible parts of the cake are the toothpicks used for the popsicles, and the wire to make the fishing pole and the rake.
