Description
As soon as I found out about this competition I knew I wanted to make a cake of "The Communist Party" as it is one of my favorite shirts and I am a huge history nerd.
I figured that the best way to display the great communist leaders and thinkers was to have them sitting on the Berlin wall looking out at east Berlin. I made a simple chocolate vegan cake and then cut it into 2 inch strips and stacked them on top of each other using a pink buttercream icing (no longer making the cake vegan). I then covered the cake in a grey concrete-like layer of fondant. It was my first experience with making and using fondant and I think it was pretty successful. I surrounded the cake with some rocky rubble and then set to making the characters out of marzipan.
Making the figures definitely took the most time and I was pretty exhausted by the end, but I think they turned out pretty well. My favorite is Fidel. Finally, I stuck all the characters onto the cake using a few toothpicks and wooden sticks to keep their heads from falling off.
The second to last step was to paint the graffiti on the western side. I started with a couple iconic phrases and images and then my friends and family helped in covering the wall. All the painting was done with food colouring mixed with water.
After 2 full days of work building it, I tore down my wall and my friends and I all enjoyed equal portions of a delicious cake. Together.
