Death and Tooth Decay cake by Monica Gonzalez

Description

I stumbled onto threadless.com via the cakejournal.com blog that I follow. Since I am an amateur cake designer, I really have no business entering a cake design contest, but I love a good challenge.
The baking process was relatively easy with little to no injuries. However, I think that I need to adjust the legs on my stove since the vanilla cake baked out of the pan.
Once the cake cooled I leveled and layered the cake. Then I iced the cake with buttercream icing. I decided to use rolled marshmallow fondant from a recipe that I got off of cakejournal.com. This was my first time to make fondant and it got very messy. I almost gave up, but I persevered and created something that resembled fondant.
After I rolled the fondant on the cake, I trimmed it and smoothed it over the cake. I let the covered cake rest for a day and then began the arduous task of decorating it. My husband and I went to several stores to try and find as many of the same candies as the original artist used. This proved to be very difficult, so a few of the items have been interchanged for similar candies of the same color/shape. I made a batch of royal icing to act as glue as I began placing the candies onto the fondant covered cake.
Overall, I think it was a success; hopefully the judges agree. We thoroughly enjoyed designing the cake and eating it too! Now it is time to start our 2nd cake…we just hope it will turn out as god as this one! ;)
