Description
Let me first start by saying that the making of this cake has been the best stress reliever, enjoyment, greatest, and eventful project I have done all summer. I had just stumbled across threadcakes.com site and found this contest very interesting and I also thought this contest would be a great time expediter until my upcoming cruise. It is not like I have a quiet schedule to start with but sinking my thoughts into making a cake for a contest would consume all of my available thoughts.
After registering, I went out bought my cake mixes, fondant, gum paste, colorings.....all that “good stash” stuff that I may need. I had yet to get my inspiration. So (I am going to tell on myself) while at work one day, I searched and searched through ALL of the shirt designs. The best one that stood out was Let’s Get Physical. It could not be a better one for me personally since I was trying to stick to a pre-cruise diet.
It has taken me three weeks to complete the cake. Now, a lot of this time is the simple fact that this will be the third cake that I have ever made using fondant. I wanted to do it right and as close to the process as I have watched on TV. I took one evening and baked three 8 inch round cakes. I knew I had to refrigerate them to set them up firm before frosting and stacking them up. Once the cakes were covered the process just flowed smoothly.
When it cake time to cut out the cheese holes, my daughter was first in line to get the sample pieces. I used my melon baler to make each cheese hole. My daughter had had mini-frosted cake balls for a snack.
The best part about making this cake was free cutting out the letters for “Let’s Get Physical” in fondant. It actually turned out easier than what I initially thought it would. I have learned that as long as you have a cutting mat and an exacta knife, you can get a LONG way in cake making.
Now, here is some advice for everyone and the eventful part of my cake making experience. I called my parents to let them know that I was headed over to their house to show them the cake and cut into it. While on the phone, I was also in the process of loading the cake into the car, along with my camera, my purse, etc. (Do I always have to try to multi-task everything!!!!!) I had forgotten I put the phone on top of the car when I was done talking to my parents. After my daughter and I heard this weird sound, my daughter yells, “MOM THAT WAS YOUR PHONE!!” While it is landing out on the busy highway. I quickly hit the brakes to turn around to the dreaded spot and expecting the worst. It turned out to be my lucky day. If it was not for the case on it, I would have one broken and ruined phone. What frosts this story is I just splurged and gave in to buying the “do everything under the apple” phones three weeks ago. My advice to everyone – DO NOT PUT A CELL PHONE ON A CAR!!!! Hmmmm…..I think I can see a t-shirt design for this; can’t you?
The two other cakes made have been the cake on the one pound box of Wilton’s fondant and a Burger King crown cake. Making this cake has been the best experience and enjoyment for me.
