Hi there! I am an amateur baker and this is my first time using fondant! Being recently divorced, this image seemed like the obvious choice for me! I did everything from scratch with this cake!
I started with a vanilla cake recipe from Williams and Sonoma's site. I baked it in a 9x13 pan and trimmed about 1/2 inch off either side to give it the right dimension. I covered it with an old family buttercream recipe. Then I found a simple marshmallow fondant recipe on whatscookingamerica.net. The fondant was surprisingly easy and very fun to work with. I have a million ideas for its use floating around in my head now! I tinted the fondant and rolled it out for the cake covering. Then, I tinted and rolled out pieces for the image. I made a stencil, and cut it all out using a paring knife. I had a little trouble with her machine gun and it stuck to the cake a little crooked but otherwise, all went fairly smoothly! I applied it all and used black tinted buttercream frosting for the littler details.
Voila! I love to "work stuff out" through my baking and this one definitely says something! My first Threadless cake ever! Next year, 3D!
