Infamous Mishaps Throughout History cake by Leah Kerr

Description

As soon as I heard about this competition I knew exactly which design I would use. I love this design and thought it would translate really well as a 3D cake. I started by making a chocolate devils food cake and a stabilised whipped cream filling. I carved the shape of the body in one piece then carved the arms and legs individually. I added a 3rd layer to the body and the head and carved them into a more rounded shape.

I covered a cake board with light grey fondant as a background then coloured all the gumpaste to cover the cake. I had some pink which I mixed with a little blue and white to make the monster main colour. I used dark blue mixed with white for the blue parts and black mixed white for the stonehenge stones. I made all the individual stones and left them to dry.

I then filled the layers of chocolate cake with the cream and placed them on the covered board. I covered the monster with the pink/ purple and moulded the toes, horns & ears. Then came the blue belly and nose, the black eyes and markings on the feet. I used a pearl lustre dust mixed with vodka and painted the whole cake before placing the stones around the monster. Then came the hard part, cutting into the cake - although it tasted delicious.

From start to finish this cake took 5 hours to make and about 3 minutes to demolish.
