Gingerbread Nightmares cake by Sara MacNeil

Description

I read about Threadcakes and thought it would be a fun activity to do with my friends. We're always looking for cheap activities, and take any excuse to have cake.
This meant having to do the entire project in one day, when we could all find the time to get together, so it happened pretty much on the fly. The day we could get together was a hot, humid Sunday, which meant the bulk of the group was at least some degree of hungover while we worked. Crazy.
I spent the afternoon baking a vanilla pound cake while my friends "helped" by watching TV, and taking the occasional picture. Then we picked the gingerbread design from the few shirts I had narrowed it down to, and made a Navin (vanilla liqueur) buttercream. I assembled the cake, adding a layer red currant jam and buttercream in the middle, then we took a break for dinner.
We iced and decorated the cake, then made the "gingerbread" out of rolled fondant, wishing all along it was a less humid day.
In the end, I think the cake turned out pretty well, considering it was a one-day project. And it tasted pretty good, too, with my friends helping with what they'd really come for, eating lots of cake. Overall, the day was a success!
