Nostalgia

I didn't find out about this contest until, oh, maybe a few weeks ago? After that, it was a mad rush to pick out this design and plan it out while flying madly across the continent twice for conventions.

The cake was made out of a red velvet cake mix from a box, but the icing (I promise you, that's icing in the container, not mashed potatoes like my mother nearly mistook it for) is cream cheese frosting from scratch. Likewise, the fondant was also out of a box with royal icing also made from scratch. That being said, this was my very first time working with fondant and royal icing, so it was a learning experience for sure! I've got plenty of notes about what NOT to do next time around and I completely plan to do this all over again! Far better than I did this time, I swear it!

Also with timing as it was, this cake ended up being my birthday cake as well. However since not many family and friends of mine eat cake (GASP), this is really only a six inch cake, just enough for little old me.

This cake (thanks to its small size) took, in total, a whole day and a whole night!

Demolishing it will take far less time. Oh yes, I can assure you of that.
