Description
I've been decorating cakes since 2001, my most fun, favorite and definitely most challenging cakes are the 3D sculpted cakes.
I carved this cake out of a 9X13 sheet cake and a 8X8 cake. I like to have as many visuals as possible in order to make a 3D cake, it makes it easier to get it to look "real". After drawing a sketch of the fist and searching for photos online of fists (oh yes, and also taking pictures of my husband's fist :), I drew the details (fingers) on the crumbcoated cake to be able to carve it and start the sculpting process.
I used the big icer tip by Wilton to cover the cake with chocolate buttercream. It helps keeping crumbs off the icing and gives me more control in how much icing I put where. I use a small angled spatula (which is my most favorite cake decorating tool!) to sculpt and ice smooth, the spatula in combination with hot water is the secret to a supersmooth iced cake. The decorating part of this cake took about 3 hours from start to finish.
I baked and decorated this cake while I was in Germany during the summer (yes, a cake decorator always has the cake tools in the suitcase :).
I only got to eat the carved out leftovers, as the cake itself was a gift to a popular German Band (Soehne Mannheims/Xavier Naidoo) for their new album release since the upright fist is a "symbol" in their newest video.
