Description
This was my first attempt at serious cake decorating. I've been following the threadcakes gallery online for the past few weeks, and it looked like so much fun that I needed to try it myself, and I was definitely not disappointed.
I baked a box cake in the morning, and then followed online recipes for fondant, royal icing, and buttercream while the cake cooled. The next step was coloring the fondant, which I found more difficult that I had anticipated. I didn't realize that black would be so difficult to make! I covered the whole cake in black, then created the basic shape with white. I did the detail work on the white by outlining it with a knife, and filling it in with a makeshift icing - a mix of food coloring, confectioner's sugar, and water. Then I finished off by coloring the rest of the fondant and decorating with that.
All in all, it took about 10 hours. The time and effort was definitely worth it. Not only do I have a delicious cake, but I've found a new hobby as well!
