Escape to Space cake by Priscilla Phitsanoukane

Description

This couldn't have been done without the help of my wonderful friends: Victoria, Ryan, Evan, Chris, and Willie. :)

We used yellow cake mix for the base and (after a night in the fridge) shaved off some of the top to create a flat surface.
Initially we were going to cover the cake with black fondant (made from scratch), but realized how difficult it was to make fondant that dark, and opted for frosting with black food coloring instead.
We did end up using fondant for the big stars and rocket ship. We hand painted the design on the ship using a brush and chocolate frosting.
In addition to the fondant stars, we sprinkled some powdered sugar on the black frosting to give a more star-filled-sky effect. The smoke was piped by hand with frosting in a sandwich bag.

We spread out the process over 2 days, allowing the cake and fondant to spend a night in the fridge.

The cake was great with a glass of milk.
The frosting also made our lips black. Awesome!
