Quack Attack cake by Kelli Hunter

Description

I read about this contest on Cake Wrecks and immediately flew over to the web site to check out the shirts and come up with an idea for a cake. Unfortunately for me, there were entirely too many great designs to choose from! I was finally able to narrow my choices down to two. Now I just needed an occasion to serve two cakes. I called my parents and set up a big family dinner at their house for a week later. Call me pushy but it worked! And it gave me a chance to try out a new recipe for a strawberry shortcake cake; white cake brushed with strawberry syrup, a layer of sliced berries, and a vanilla buttercream icing.
A week before the dinner, I started out by coloring some fondant and using a press mat to make the floor to cover the cake board. I used black fondant to cut out the sailors and set them aside to dry. Three days later I got back to work. I used a crispy cereal treat to shape the ducks and my first boat. I let them sit for two days, hoping they would dry out and harden. It didn’t happen. Apparently cereal treats never dry. Scary thought! Anyway, I covered them with buttercream, smoothed out the bumps and lumps, and then covered them with fondant. Once they were done, I saw that my boat was entirely too big so I made another one out of fondant.
The day before the big event I baked a half sheet white cake. I let it cool, then sliced, assembled, and iced the cake. I smoothed the icing and set it in the fridge to set up. I colored some fondant for the towels and bath mat. I rolled them out, used Wilton’s triple star tip to give them texture, and then folded the towels.
To assemble the cake, I made three different shades of blue fondant and marbled them together to make the water. I cut it to fit the top and laid it on there. I dusted it heavily with cornstarch so the next layer wouldn’t stick. I covered the whole cake with white fondant and cut out the top to show the water. I used vanilla extract to attach the newly cut tub edge to the water to hold it all together. I made the faucet, handles, and water pipe with fondant, then used silver pearl dust and lemon extract to paint them. I used vanilla extract to attach all the bits and pieces to the cake, including the one sailor who managed to completely escape the tub.
We had a good dinner and then everyone chowed down on cake. The new recipe was a success…if the expression on my niece’s face tells us anything! And look…almost no leftovers...more proof of success!
