Polar Gardening cake by Grace Schroer

Description

My cake corresponds pretty directly to the original design, which is one of my friend's favorite shirts. I added a few details, including a garden hose (and stray popsicle seedlings) that I thought was a nice extension of the polar gardening theme. I used a yellow cake for the base and tiny chocolate cakes for the stuffing of the igloo. And I thought these things were tasty on the outside.

I'm not a big fan of the taste of fondant, so I combined cream cheese, powdered sugar, and almond extract for the visible icing and figures. I tinted the icing with food coloring, and then rolled it out (to cover the cake) or shaped it into the parts of the eskimo, the popsicles, and all the other details. Toothpicks were used to support the popsicles and rake.

My favorite part of the cake is probably the igloo - I applied individual rectangles of the cream cheese frosting to give it an ice block appearance. I also sprinkled some silver "shimmer dust" on the base frosting and popsicles to give the appearance of a snowy frost. Admittedly, once I cut up the cake for my family, jack frost wasn’t the only thing nipping at the eskimo’s nose.

I completed all of the baking and decorating over the course of three days, adding things whenever I had time to work on it. When it was done, I enjoyed it with my family for a delicious dessert. Next project: a matching eskimo pie.
