Anthill Trap cake by Dinka Bogovic Redzepagic

Description

This would be my first entry one of my cakes in any kind of competition, other than that who is going to get one more slice of cake when I usually bake them.
Friends say that I should do more of those competitions where they have to eat cake afterwards :)

I noticed the competition rather late so I didn't have to much time for the cake between 10 hours work time and construction work on my new house.
It took me three days and I worked on it until late in the night so I'm a little sleep deprived now :/

At first, I was baffled on what design to choose, since there are so many great T's on Threadless.
In the end decided that I'll go with Anthill trap design with a little twist.
In short, since original anthill is essentially a 2D design, I decided to make it 3D
And as all of us in competition are making and eating tons of cakes I thought it was unfair for ants to be eaten.
So I made anteater have warm welcome for them at the base of anthill with his own small anthill cake.

I opted for chocolate mud cake as a base, with vanilla lemon sponge cake added in the middle for that extra flavor and texture and cranberry jam in between.
Covering is made out of fondant, and hand painted.

Only non-edible parts of the cake are the toothpick that holds the „Home“ sign and one for anteater's hands.

For the small decorations I used a PlayDoh machine I had since it is probably the easiest way of making small diameter „spaghetti“ out of fondant.
I used those to make both shrubs on the anthill, and ants themselves.

Cake turned out to be unexpectedly delicious ( I blame it on lemony middle ) and I served it with whipped cream.
So when's the next competition? Can't wait :D
