Description
Hello! My name is Breanna, I'm 16 and I live in Alberta, Canada.
This is only the second cake I've ever designed and made, but watching some Food Network helped me out a bit. ;)
The entire cake was created using: Fondant and food colouring, buttercream icing, yellow cake mix (with necessary addings: eggs, milk, etc),two toothpicks for the birds legs which I covered in icing, as well as my blood, sweat, and tears (none of which actually made it IN to the cake!)
Upon baking the cake in my 40-odd-year-old-oven, I started by rolling out fondant which I coloured gray using black food colouring. After covering the cake, I darkened the left-over fondant to use as the shadow. I cut it out using an x-acto knife and scissors. To add some flare to the sides of the cake, I used various darkened pieces of fondant that I had formed into feathers by using a pizza cutter. The feathers on the shadow were piped on with white buttercream icing, although it is tricky to find icing attachments so tiny!
I then started on the bird, which is simply made of yellow fondant and some icing touch ups. I painted on his eyes with food colouring, and stuck in two toothpicks for legs so he could stick into the cake, which I later covered in orange icing. I added some extra "featherage" with yellow and white icing.
And of course with having two older brothers hanging around, the cake didn't go unnoticed and was quickly devoured after final photos were taken. I couldn't eat any myself because I had worked on it so long and was sick of cake by the end of it! It must have been good though because it went quick! :)
**Please note that no real birds were harmed during the making/eating of my cake**
The whole process took about 3 days of on and off work.
I was super excited to hear about this contest and I am even more excited for the opportunity to have it judged!
I hope you enjoy, bon appetit!
