Description
I chose to do parable paranoia because A) I LOVE red riding hood and B) I thought it would be a good choice for turning into a 3D cake. I loved the color scheme and the use of framing the character in the oval. Made me think of Red running through a tunnel so I thought HEY, why don't I do a tunnel in a cake? Never seen that before. So I went about thinking how I would do the trees and the tunnel. I spent many an hour wandering the aisles trying to find a good "tunnel". Pop cans, soda bottles, even paper towel tubes crossed my mind but in the end, a can of pringles stepped up to the challenge because the can was actually oval.
So I set to baking my red velvet cake (could a red riding hood themed cake be any other flavor?) and then started on the fondant characters. They took the most time because they had to dry and some (like Red) had to be done in steps. I made the trees out of fondant as well by rolling out thin strips and wrapping them around a dowel. Once they were dry, I pulled out the dowel and added some roots. I glued all the characters and trees to the cake with royal icing.
I tried to recreate that wood etched look by hand painting on some lines onto the cake with some black food coloring. I also did Red's features with black food coloring.
All and all, the cake was super fun to make and it took me about 10 hours over the course of three days. Sorry there are no photos of us eating it, once it was time to cut the cake, I was so busy eating I forgot to take photos but it was delicious! Very moist thanks to that fondant.
