Description
Hello. We (2 very, very amateur bakers) present to you....our Pillow Fight cake! The ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny: pillow edition! We went through our collection of t-shirts and decided to do Pillow Fight because pillows are cool and we, ourselves, are avid pillow fighters. Also this way one of use could say "there was a pillow fight!!!" à la Willem Dafoe in Boondock Saints constantly. Makes for some very dramatic cake baking.
The Details:
We used a funfetti cake base and Betty Crocker vanilla frosting. We stacked our 3 layers of cake together and carved them into a dome. Our fondant is a marshmallow fondant, which we added various amounts of food coloring to for the different shades of blue. We used ungodly amounts of it to make our cake fondant a navy color. And then we painted a layer of blue on top of that. To make the pillows we used the leftover scraps from carving and mixed them with icing so we'd have what we called "edible play-doh." Stacking the pillows on the cake was nerve-wracking since, ironically enough, they kept squishing each other. Letters and feathers came last. We cut those out with our trusty precision steak knife.
On a more sentimental note, making this cake was eye-opening. It was certainly everything we imagined our first (cake-making) time would be. We even managed not to cry into the fondant, knowing that it'd change the consistency. In the end, a great time was had by all and no one was forced to do the walk of shame come morning. Except the losing pillows. They walked of shame straight into our mouths.
Random Tidbits:
-We're pretty sure the pillow on the top left won the final battle because the morning after we finished the cake, we discovered the one on the right splattered on the counter a little too far from the cake for it to have been a simple fall.
- Our cake was so awesome that a fly in the vicinity dropped dead at the sight of it. No lie. It was on its way out the window, rubbernecked a little too long and crashed into the window frame instead. R.I.P We saved you a slice.
