The Invisible Gentleman cake by Brian Harmon

Description

I love Threadless and I watch Ace of Cakes and Food Network Challenge religiously. When I saw this contest, I jumped on it. I had never decorated a cake or used fondant before, but always wanted to try. I chose The Invisible Gentleman because I thought it would make a killer cake.

The whole process from baking to finished took about 6 hours. The gentleman is made from two sheet cakes, stacked and sculpted. His invisible head is a small glass fishbowl. (clever, huh?) His hat is a small mound of leftover cake scraps molded to shape. He's covered in homemade buttercream then fondant that I tinted myself. I think I'm most proud of his fondant tie. The plaid was hard. His pipe is made of gum paste and extra details are made from royal icing I made from scratch.

After baking him, my friends and I got together for a monster movie party perfectly fitting the Invisible Gentleman and dug into his chest. It was a bit sad to carve into him, but his white cake flesh with the buttery icing tasted great!
