Yay! I finished! I almost didn't make it – I even called in sick to work today so I could get it done. *ssssshhh!* This is a great design, it's very 'Great Wave', which I've always loved. Hope you guys like it, too. I started on the dragon early last week, but didn't get back to the project until Friday night. Finding time even on the weekends is a challenge – I work full time and also freelance, and have 2 young kids (aka my 'helpers'). We all had a good time, this was a fun cake to make!
The cake is totally edible – except for the inside which had traditional stacked cake support. I started with a simple butter layer cake. It's frotsted with a simple vanilla frosting and covered in fondant. The entire design was built out of gumpaste, fondant and icing, and I used almond extract to dilute the paste and gel colors. I sculpted the dragon body first, and kept it supported on skewers to make it easier to paint. I built the boat next, then the waves, both sculpted with gumpaste (I love gumpaste!). The clouds are made from fondant, and the sides of the cake were iced violet for effect. I could have omitted the whole fondant cover, but had originally intended to paint the surface to match the design. That didn't work out so well, so I went ahead with the icing effect. Silly, no? All together, it took about 2 full days to complete, when you mush it all together. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad I got to finish it!
