Mister Mittens' Big Adventure cake by Julia Commander

Description

Hey. This entry was created by a pair of cat-lady bakers by the names of Julia Commander and Sarah Morris. Our favorite Threadless tee is unquestionably Mister Mittens’ Big Adventure, mostly because it reminds us of the classic Bill Hader/Andy Samberg sketch “Laser Cats” from SNL. So when a close friend pointed the way to the Threadcakes site, we knew our destiny was sealed. We are no mere novices in the awesome-cake-baking arena, so we grabbed a fiber-optic party favor and got down to business.
Our creation is made up of two nine-inch round cakes (Betty Crocker Super Moist Mix all the way). One of the cakes served as the base, and the other was cut into smaller shapes to form the cat face, ears, and muzzle. We made a vat of buttercream icing from scratch and mixed the vibrant colors of Mister Mittens.
The real challenge of making this cake was rigging the lights. First, we had to tackle the fiber-optic whiskers. We propped our cake up on a Franco Sarto shoebox and hid the light-up party favor underneath. From there, we could feed the fiber-optic wires through a complex matrix of bendy-straws. Btw, the colors change. Lighting task two was the laser eyes. Laser pointers at office supply stores are severely over-priced, so we bought a couple of light-up key-chains from a drug store. Once we freed the lights from their cumbersome key-chain rings and cleaned them properly, we stuck them into the cat face. At this point, we had been slaving over this majestic creature for nearly 6.5 hours. We then proceeded to take 146 pictures of this cake, and we hope you enjoy looking at these select few.
We do not know how this cake tastes as of yet due to the fact that at 12:01 a.m. when this contest ends, Julia will turn 19. We assume that it will be delicious because we have taste-tested heavily along the way.
In closing, we would like to dedicate this magnificent cake to Rachel Commander, who knows how to use the internet; Kelli, who gave out awesome party favors in the 7th grade; and Charm City Cakes for being big, bad, and awesome.
