Zombie at Tiffany s cake by Gonzuela Bastarache

Description

Oneday while I was kayaking off the top of an 80' waterfall I was thinking about what my next big challenge would be... I had already jumped off cliffs and out of planes, swam with the sharks, wrestled a bear, went to the moon on a homemade spaceship - it just felt like there was no thrills left in the world...

Then eureka! My friend Burton (who was wrestling a savage lion) text messaged me with his one free hand while fighting of the vicious beast with the other and it read: "Gonzuela, did you hear about the Threadcakes contest? You should enter".

Atlast fate had bestowed my next great challenge! It seemed like mission impossible but I knew I had to atleast try...

For days I pondered just how to make a 3D cake with as few structural supports as possible. I decided to use a very dense vegan cake recipe and baked a smaller cake to reduce the weight the cake actually had to support.

But what would I make? After looking through hundreds of t-shirt designs I was not able to decide. So I thought of the things that I liked most in life: #1 eating breakfast. #2. Anything that is decaying, blistering, and putrifying... Hmmmmm...wait! What luck! A "Zombie at Tiffany's" combined my love of food and gross stuff all in one design!

So I went out to the market to get supplies and ran into George Clooney - again. He had 6 dozen roses and a hand full of jewels... Then and he asked for my hand in marriage - again - and I finally said "Look George, I've told you like 5 times now that I just don't have time for you, okay?" Nice guy but he tries too hard. The heart broken George Clooney shuffled off into the distance and I was back on track to pick up my icing suagr and flour!

Once I returned home to my insanely exciting kitchen (seriously, it has a roller coaster and I once entertained the Queen there) I began baking and decorating the cake.

The "Cake Creation Process" is as follows:

I baked the cakes. I let them cool. I stacked the cake. I carved it. I put buttercream on it. I put fondant on it. I painted it. It took a long time. Then I was done. The End.

...Aren't you glad I started with my wacky story first? I'm not sure how long this all took to be honest because I started it and then had to leave it for a few days while I worked on other stuff that I had deadlines for and decided to freeze it just incase I couldn't get back to it for weeks. Ummm, don't know if I'd reccomend freezing a fondant covered cake, Folks! As you can see from some of the photos in hot summer weather frozen cakes sweat like a sumo wrestler when you take them out of the cold. Not a pretty sight. But anyway the cake finally got finished and I can finally return to my normal - but somewhat exciting life :-).
