Fishing cake by Julie Freund

Description

I thought this shirt was really cute, and would make a great cake. My first idea was to use chocolate fondant to match the shirt's colors; but I decided to put more emphasis on yumminess than perfectly matching the shirt for this one. The cake is a from scratch chocolate-banana, I filled the layers with Nutella buttercream, and covered everything with a dark-chocolate ganache. The moon and clouds were done with white and reg. chocolate. Again, I opted for a more cocoay color scheme than the greenish-color of the shirt.

I had been having lots of problems with gumpaste figures, so after a bunch of googling I decided to try pre-made fondant mixed with a little gum-tex, rather than the homemade and wilton mix gumpaste that I had been trying. What a world of difference:)!! Much firmer, and easier to shape. I made my little figures out of the stiffer fondant mix, and painted a few details with a little gel food color and vodka.

The heart/lure is white chocolate on thread. A very fine wire might have been a better choice though, since I couldn't get it to hang right, and ended up putting it in the figures "wrong" hand.

This cake was headed off to my mom's fourth of July BBQ, along with my Bunnies entry- but it was too high for my cake carrier, so I had to convert the box:)
