Burgertee cake by Helena Davies

Description

The two major decisions for the cake, the design to base it on & the type of cake, were surprisingly free of hassle. In my opinion all impressive cakes should have amazing, unnatural looking colours, so the bugertee design jumped out at me straight away. & The type of cake was never an issue. It was, by default, lemon sponge cake because that's my boyfriend's favourite.
So after making double the recipe, which actually took no time at all, I baked three 8" cakes all one by one, because I only have one cake tin that size, which took considerably longer.
The next job was to colour the icing, as we only had blocks of white regalice icing, by working in food colouring. (the cake was actually made several days ago & has now been completely eaten, & yet my fingers are still stained green & blue & yellow.)
From there it was pretty easy. We spread the cakes with jam mixed with hot water so the icing would stick & carefully covered each piece individually, cut out the tomatoes & strips of lettuce, the tongue & the eyes. After that it was a simple question of assembly.
The smell of baking cake wafting through the house all day meant everyone was pretty hungry & after we'd taken some photos the cake didn't last long.
It was definitely enjoyed though (:
