This is my first threadcakes entry and I couldn't wait to get started on it! After looking through the long page of choices, I decided this would be a cute first cake to recreate!
I started by baking a lot of chocolate cake-- 2 half-sphere pans, and 3 square pans of varying sizes. Next I cut and assembled them to create the castle, beach ball, and pail. I wanted the castle to have a sandy texture, so I crushed up graham crackers, and covered the castle in vanilla icing and then the graham crackers (I was going for a smore-like combination of tastes!) The beach ball and the pail were covered in fondant, and the shovel, army men, and flag were made of fondant as well.
This cake took me three days to complete, with the third day just being finishing up some details, and of course doing the final photo shoot! It was strange, on the second night I had the men waiting in the castle all nice and quiet, and when I woke up the next morning there were arrows in the beach ball and it was slightly deflated. Hmm.
Since I'm working as a resident assistant this summer, I had plenty of people around the dorms to help eat all of the cake, which was great! It tasted pretty yummy, and was a nice break from dining hall food as well!
