Cookies cake by Elizabeth Evans

Description

I'd never worked with fondant before, or made a layered cake before - but I really wanted to learn how! I made a little cake to practice last week, and this week I decided to go for it for real -- there were a few times when it was a little shaky and I learned a LOT while I was making it: Including the fact that fondant doesn't like weather that is 90 degrees and humid! My camera also died just as I was getting ready to start -- so I had to pack everything up and go to my parents' house, so that my dad could document the process with his camera.
I made all three tiers (4 inch, 6 inch, 8inch) out of yellow cake, covered them with some chocolate icing and topped that with store bought white fondant that I dyed blue. Each layer was a little easier! I cut the "monster" out of lighter blue fondant, the "cookies" were all cut out of tan fondant with the back end of a decorating tip and the "chips" punched out with a No. 3 decorating tip. I piped royal icing around the base of each layer, then used the royal icing to stick on all of the decorations.
I donated the cake to our Parish Fair, where it was the most expensive thing they sold on opening night, going for an impressive 10 dollars!
The whole process took about 7 hours total, but that first layer of fondant took 3 or 4 tries to get right! I would never have been able to do it without my dad offering his photography skills and my mom offering the use of her kitchen. I'm really excited to try another cake soon!
