That Night We Talked About Our Dreams cake by Nikki Burgess

Description

After viewing the gallery of entries for the 2009 competition over & over again, I decided that I should probably give it a go this year!

I decided upon the "That Night We Talked About Our Dreams" as I thought the little bunnies were too cute & it looked like a simple design to replicate. I bake on a regular basis, but this would be the first time I have baked and decorated a cake for artistic purposes rather than purely for its taste.
Overall the cake took me just a weekend to do from start to finish, doing not much else in between!
I chose a madeira cake as I wanted a dense crumb to support the fondant icing & that would still be as moist if it had to sit out for a while whilst decorating.
I formed the bunny ears around a star shaped cookie cutter (which I would later use as the template for the star shape for the middle of the cake), then formed the bodies separately to stick together once they were on the cake.
I used a ready-made frosting to save time to provide a surface for my fondant to stick to. I dyed the fondant green & shaded the surface with black food colouring paste. I then cut out the star shape from white fondant which I again shaded with black food colouring & used white food colouring to splatter on the little stars.
I then stuck on the little rabbits around the large star & used a bit of white edible glitter to really bring out the sparkle!
The cake was very tasty indeed & have found it to be a brilliant accompaniment to the new season's strawberries!
