Blooming cake by Christina Marion

Description

This year I finally decided to enter the Threadcakes competition, with the artistic assistance of my extremely talented sister. We decided on the "Blooming" design, and sketched out our plans, and when the next rainy day rolled around we went to work. I bought all of the supplies at the grocery store (I trust Betty Crocker more than myself), and baked up the cake in the morning, making two french vanilla cakes. I later mixed up a raspberry cream filling for between the layers. I will admit that this was both my first layered cake, and fondant cake- I figured it was a good excuse to try something new!

After assembling the cakes (3 layers on the bottom tier, and 2 on the top tier) and mostly successfully applying the fondant, my sister took over. Using the Blooming design as a reference, she hand painted the buck onto fondant using food coloring. Meanwhile, I tinted fondant pink, and shaped the blossoms. My sister also hand sculpted birds to adorn the tiers, and hand painted a few more onto fondant. She also piped dark-melted chocolate into the antler/branch shapes, both on the cake and to top the cake. Finally, she hand-created and painted a large flower for the side of the cake. We carefully attached each piece to the cake, every last flower and all!

We took a few pictures that night, but decided to save the cake for the local American Red Cross blood drive we were volunteering at two days later. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a scorcher that day - 97 degrees - and our cake didn't hold up as well as we had hoped, as some of the flowers melted down the side. But the cake was still delicious! We cut the cake and invited all of the doners to partake - it was a wonderful source of sugary goodness for those who had been gracious enough to donate blood that day!
