Description
I made this cake in about 4 days. The cake is a 1-2-3-4 cake and the icing under the fondant is chocolate buttercream. This cake is completely edible, not one dowel or toothpick in sight!
To begin with I made the sail and a post out of fondant mixed with tylose powder, which turns the fondant into more of a gumpaste. The post that I intended to use to hold up the sail never would harden (probably from the humidity) and so I had to get creative. I searched the stores for something I could use, but finally at the last minute decided to glue spaghetti together with royal icing for the post. It worked!
I made up the cakes from scratch and some homemade marshmallow fondant. All the fondant was white except for the teal colored fondant. I hand painted every thing on the cake, including the teal fondant. To paint the colors I mixed food coloring and lemon extract, and then eventually vodka because I found out it was a lot cheaper!
The shoe is completely cake that I carved out of an 8x3" pan. I dyed the shoe cake red.
I made the boy and girl out of fondant mixed with tylose powder. I used spaghetti to help support their heads and arms because as with the post the fondant refused to get hard, and I refused to use anything not edible!!!
I added the design to the sail with royal icing. I painted the spaghetti post and the ropes with brown food coloring and vodka.
Of course as soon as I was finished my kids were begging for some cake!
