So- this design caught my eye immediately, but I looked through the whole gallery of options because it seemed too easy to pick the first one that I liked. But over the next few days I kept thinking about the Stay Puft marshmallow man and the fact that most of my cakes are covered in marshmallow fondant which is a very destructive process for the marshmallows.
It seemed like the perfect combination of cake, design and tragedy for marshmallow-kind and so I began...
The cakes were easy- vanilla and chocolate 5" cakes made with batter left over from batches of cupcakes I was making. They're filled with dark chocolate buttercream and that's the crumb coat too. The whole thing is then covered in cream cheese frosting and wrapped in marshmallow fondant. The handle and Ghostbusters symbol are 50/50 mmf & gumpaste and it was really handy to have stuff in the kitchen that was the right shape to form and dry them (this took about a day). The Stay Puft man is made from marshmallows with fondant accents that I painted with food coloring instead of mixing in to get the bright colors.
The hot chocolate is a swirl of chocolate frosting and the pieces were arranged in this. The exterior items were attached with gumpaste and water. The only non-food items are the three toothpicks holding up the "steam".
My daughter was very pleased to get the ghost head to eat and the rest of us settled for the cake part- which was really delicious!
