Description
I chose this design because I wanted the added challenge of hanging a cake on a stick. I've never done anything like that before and couldn't shut my brain off with every idea passing through. So I knew this was the one!
I started with making the gumpaste pieces so they had time to dry while I made the rest of the cake. I made the shoe, icecream cone and hate all out of gumpaste. I destroyed my dogs ball to create a form for the hat. The waffle cone I used a cooling rack to press into it and make the criss cross pattern.
I baked all of the cake from scratch...and also had the idea to use Rice Crispy treats for the legs since that would be light-weight....But as I read through the rules and the Facebook comments I decided to nix that idea and use "cake" coming up with the idea of white chocolate and cake crumbs mixed together to make cake bondo. I molded that around some wire to form the legs. I hung the wires through my base and built the cake around that.
I wasn't sure yet whether I wanted to cover him in Fondant or just use buttercream. I personally don't like the taste/texture of fondant and usually just end up peeling it off of the cake before I eat it so I decided to go with Buttercream to ice him. I'd say about 96% of the decoration is in buttercream with the rest being fondant.
Overall I spent about 16 hours between 6 days or so of decorating. It's my first cake contest and I'm pretty happy with the finished product!
