Description
This is my first Threadcakes entry! I've been wanting to enter since last summer, but haven't had the time or the skillz until now. I think I spent about 6 hours decorating this cake with this design. I was originally going to do a different shirt, but had some problems with my fondant and decided to do something frosting based instead.
The cake is just a chocolate cake mix, and the frosting is canned white frosting dyed with gel food coloring. Nothing too fancy, but still tasty. I made the balloons by cutting up red Starbursts and molding them into shape. They weren't quite as red as I wanted, so I painted them with the gel food coloring. The balloon tails and highlights were done with white frosting that I put in a ziplock bag and piped on. I also made the letters on the side with a ziplock bag, but with white chocolate instead. I piped the words onto wax paper and then placed them on the cake after they hardened. They read "You and I in a little toy shop buy a bag of a balloons with the money we've got," which is of course the first line from the song the t-shirt is based on, 99 Red Balloons. I decided to texture the frosting partly because I like that look better than trying to make it smooth, and also because liked the cloudy effect it gave. This was a fun cake to make, and I'm really happy with how it came out!
