Description
It was hard narrowing down which shirt I should make into a cake, but in the end I kept coming back to this design. Look how happy it is!
I started off by making some royal icing to create the figures. I piped them out onto wax paper, and it took a few days for them to harden before I could draw the smiley faces on with an edible marker.
The next day I started on the cakes. I used a yellow box mix because they cakes are easy to bake and hard to mess up.
I wanted to do a layer cake because I thought it would give the design a fun 3-dimensional look as opposed to doing the images as one layer on a sheet cake. I didn't count on the top layer being too small to house the cloud and sun so you could view them head on, but in the end I liked the wraparound look it created.
I let the cakes cool down and on the 3rd day I went to work on building. I torted all the layers and made two tiers using white frosting. Then, I started assembling the characters and the other adornments.
The worst part of the whole process was not only having to cut into the cake at the end, but having to disassemble it so I could bring it into work since it was too tall for my cake carrier. But it was sooo delicious!
