Eyes in the Dark cake by Lia Masters

Description

Well, originally, I chose "Eyes in the dark" out of ALL the selections, because I liked the T-shirt and I am new to cake decorating and I thought it might be an easy one to start with....HA. Actually, the baking part was easy, oh and the frosting part, but the rest of it took ALOT longer than I thought!
I started with one of my favorite cake mixes. A little more challenging because I HAVE to bake Gluten free! Sometimes those mixes are a bit more crumbly. But I made a yummy carrot cake with walnuts and raisins.
Next I started on the challenging part. Making those EYES!. I used Fondant. I colored and rolled it. Went through the mistakes of letting it dry out, and having to throw some away. I had to decide weather I wanted to sculpt the Fondant or just paint it with Luster dust and Vodka. I chose a mix of both. I began with the first one the orange color. I really liked how the luster dust paint looked on the Iris. Then I added some streaks with an edible food coloring pen. Then rolled out the black and white. When I was done, I stepped back and took a look. I was really suprised how cute they were and how much I was drawn to them. I wondered what kind of creature went with each pair of those eyes!?
The pair that looks more reptilian was probably one of the most time consuming. I cut out the white. applied all the different fondant pieces, and then thought that I would just paint the scale looking eyelids. They just didn't look right! So I got the idea of using Koala Krisp (I think that is what it is called) basically, chocolate rice crispies, to surround the eye. I affixed them with Gum paste and water. Then I realized I would have to make the eyelids stand out more by rolling tiny little fondant balls and pressing them on to the yellow background. Boy was that time consuming.
So as not to make this account too long, I will stop there. I think in the beginning it took me about 3 hours per pair. Towards the end I had more techniques and ideas of how to get the results I wanted so I cut an hour off each pair. All in all, It probably took me, about 20 hours. There was a lot more detail to do than if I had just done a full cake...I think...Finally, I got to eat them. It is just me and my husband, but we always enjoy carrot cake cupcakes! MMMNnnn
