Description
In high school one of my favorite things to do was to draw Far Side cartoons that I had on a day planner, fortunately I have the talent to free hand something in front of me, but unfortunately I don't have the "creative" mind to come up with my own stuff lol. So, when I saw this contest, I figured it would be a PERFECT way to use my talent to draw and my love for making cakes!
This was my first experience with homemade fondant, that was a lot of sticky fun and I'll never use store bought again! I took two sheet cakes, made of spice cake, stacked, butter creamed (extra vanilla flavoring) and placed rolled fondant on the whole thing to make a smooth white surface for the drawing. I then free hand drew the design on the fondant and then painted the design with food coloring and a small tip decorating tool. I didn't want to use a paint brush because the original design isn't clean, straight lines, so I wanted it to look as close as possible.
From start to finish is was approximately an 8 hour job, 6 of which were dedicated to the painting of the design. I had to go really slow because I was so worried that I would smudge a line and not be able to correct it. Which unfortunately I did end up doing right at the end, but found a pleasant surprise with marshmallow fondant, a little water and it comes COMPLETELY off.
Unfortunately for contest purposes, I had to eventually cut into and eat the cake...it was yummy for sure, the whole family enjoyed it. But, with all that work I just wanted to look at it forever!
Thanks for looking at my cake! This is the first time that I've entered anything into a competition so I'm very excited about that. Win or lose, I'm just excited that actual judges are going to be looking at my cake...especially since I'm a HUGE fan of Ace of Cakes (at the risk of sounding like I'm kissing up...they seriously are the inspiration behind me wanting to decorate cakes)!!
