Feathered Fringe cake by Tania Faccone

Description

I interpreted the Feathered Fringe design in the form of a 2 layer square cake. I made the feathers from gum paste, using a cutter, and hand painted each one with food coloring. That took a few days, and I made different sized feathers.
Then I baked the cake. I used a simple vanilla cake recipe with vanilla buttercream frosting. The bottom layer was 8 inches, and the top was 6 inches. I leveled the cakes, stacked them, and crumb coated them with frosting.
After resting for a while, I covered them in rolled white fondant and stacked them together. I used only a small piece of cake board as a support under each layer.
Then I attached the feathers, both sizes, to both layers. I added feathers on the top and sides to fill in the white space.
I took the cake to my husband's office to let his teammates enjoy it. Everything in the cake is edible, made from sugar. They crashed pretty hard after that :)
All in all, the process took about a week, from buying the ingredients to making the feathers to baking and frosting the cakes to covering them and finally adding the feathers.
