The Emergence of the Easter Egg cake by Antonia Gales

Description

Ok so when I first saw this competition last year i got so excited to see all the awesome cakes that people were making. Being only 14 I didnt have much experience with more intermediate cake decorating like fondant work. This year I decided I would try it out and just have fun making a really cool cake. It took me a very long time to decide on a design and finally I chose "The Emergence of the Easter Egg". I loved all the patterns and colors in the design and right when I saw it I knew it was what I would be creating! Originally I wanted to create a totally 3D version of the cake, with the chicken standing up on its own, as seen by a few of the earlier shots. I got about half way into the structural part of the cake before I realized the idea was maybe a little too ambitious. So I took out the dowels and decided to carve the cake as if half the chicken was coming out of the base cake. I'm not even quite sure if this would be considered 3D or 2D so I hope i picked the right category! I used a chocolate sheet cake for the maroon base and covered it with a crusting buttercream and fondant. I carved the the actual chicken with a vanilla poundcake. I covered the whole chicken with buttercream and white fondant. I did most of the patchwork with different colors of fondant and a little bit of piping as well. The egg was sculpted out of home made rice krispy treats and again was covered in buttercream and fondant. The legs of the chicken were piped with buttercream and the feet were tipped with fondant. The tail, beak, wing and headpieces were made from gumpaste, and decorated with piping and fondant. This was such a great opportunity for me to practice new techniques and improve as a decorator and I had such a fun time turning this design into a cake!
