I have been stalking this site ever since I found out about the contest. I went through all the designs, but couldn't commit to one. That is, until I saw: This Too Shall Pass. I really love the look of the design, and thought it would make an interesting cake.
I used Classic Yellow Cake Mix for the cake along with homemade buttercream and homemade marshmallow fondant. I don't really care for gumpaste and have found the recipe of fondant I use dries well enough to use exclusively for my decoration elements. I carved the skull out of a loaf size cake and a small round cake, and the base out of two 9x13 layers. I decided to create the look of a wooden box for the base with the background draped over and the skull sitting on top.
I cut out a stencil for each component of the background decoration...it was time consuming, but gave a really 3D look to the "blanket." I sponged the blanket and skull with food color to give it the weathered look of the shirt. The tambourine on top is simply fondant which i molded around a round cutter and allowed to dry. The cymbals were gold colored fondant that I cut separately and inserted into the spaces I cut out of the tambourine itself. Once all the elements were put together I think I got a pretty accurate interpretation of the shirt art.
I really enjoyed making it and it turned out delicious. The neighbors in my apartment building certainly were glad I entered Threadcakes, as the got to enjoy the results. Thanks so much!!
