This is my second thread cake ever and took a lot more work than the other one. Despite my lack of proper tools I think I did okay. As was established in my last entry, I only have one round cake pan. I needed to rounds for this design so I baked one, washed the pan, and baked the other one. I used store bought pound cake mix and buttercream. I left the bottom round whole, leveled it, dirty iced it, and put it in the fridge overnight. I cut the top round in half carving it into a moon shape, dirty iced it and left it in the fridge overnight. I used the remaining cake pieces to create the astronaut and the lawnmower. I carved them out of cake, and iced and chilled those pieces as well. The next day I covered the moon piece and the astronaut pieces in fondant and painted the details using food coloring mixed with vodka. I died the rest of the butter cream dark blue to create a background, and frosted the bottom layer. Then I stacked all the pieces, added the mower handles out of fondant, and added edible glitter for the stardust. In the end I was much happier with this cake than the last one, probably because me and my roommate and I were taking sips of the un-food-colored vodka :o) I thought it tasted pretty good too. The cake, not the vodka. Oh I also discovered that when in a pinch, a can of static guard spray works very well as a rolling pin! Thanks threadcakes!
