Description
My friend Rachael and I get together once a week to do some baking, and while we usually stick to cupcakes, we decided to take on the challenge of decorating a cake.
We decided to use a box cake mix, even though we prefer to use homemade cake for our cupcakes, because we knew the decorating process would take a lot of time. For our two layer cake, we used lemon cake mix and made the sweetened whipped cream frosting and raspberry filling for the inside. We used chocolate fondant to cover the top of the cake and left the rest of the cake un-iced to show the light brown color. Rachael used a knife to carve out the 'drip' details in the fondant. This was also our first time using fondant to cover a cake; we only used it previously to make heart toppers for cupcakes.
For the decorations, we used a gold sparkle gel icing pen for the writing on top, yellow fondant for the lightening bolts and arms (supported by toothpicks), brown fondant for the legs, eyes and mouth. We found a guitar candy mold for the guitar, though initially we were going to use fondant for this piece. First, we melted milk chocolate into the mold for the guitar neck, then white candy melts for the guitar details, and red candy melts for the body.
Because we had to run around and get the supplies the day of baking, we didn't get started on the cake till 5 pm. We finished shortly before midnight, which explains why the lighting of our photos is not optimal. (It was also dark and stormy outside when we began the baking.)
The cake itself was very good, but the texture of the fondant was weird next to the fluff of the whipped cream frosting. The raspberry filling was also tasty.
It was hard destroying our creation minutes after completion, but by then we just wanted to eat the cake and go to bed.
