Know Your Nerds cake by Megan Bakaric

Description

We chose to make a cake based on the t-shirt, "Know Your Nerds", because both of our significant others are nerds. We decided to make this into a two day process so we wouldn't want to totally rip our hair out by the end of the day.

On day one we made we made the cakes and cake pops. We decided to use box cakes mixes to speed up the process. We used a chocolate devil's food cake and ended up using five boxes between the three cake layers. We then used a white buttercream frosting to cover the cake. The cake pops were made with a lemon cake with a cream cheese frosting mixed in. We then molded the heads to approximate the shapes of the nerd heads on the t-shirt. We thought the use of cake pops would be a good representation of the nerd heads.

On day two we started with a detailed list of things to accomplish. We started the day out by making the royal icing and dying it for the hair with blue and orange gel coloring. We chose the royal icing for the hair so that it would peak and dry with a hardened outer layer. We then coated the cake pops in an off white candy melt double coating. We then dyed gum paste with black gel coloring, rolled it, and then cut out the nerd icons. We then placed sticks for spacing purposes and figured out where to pipe the lettering. The gum paste icons were then placed next to each descriptive word. After piping all the lettering we then drew the different glasses on the appropriate nerd heads with the edible food coloring markers. With all that accomplished and the time it took, the coloring in the royal icing had had enough time to fully develop. Using a piping bag with the royal icing, we then piped it onto the cake pop heads and fashioned it to the hair styles of the different nerds. After each nerd was finish it was placed onto the cake. We chose to place the "Otaku" nerd in the center of the top layer because he was the only one with blue hair and he was the actual middle nerd on the t-shirt. The rest of the nerds then followed around the cake with their descriptions directly underneath each cake pop.

We then demolished and ate the nerd cake with our respective nerds.
