Know Your Nerds

The design of the "Know Your Nerds" T-shirt just screams "cupcakes!" so that's what I made - 9 painstakingly-crafted nerd cupcakes, lovingly placed on a black nerd board. I used 1/2" thick black foamcore for the background and a silver paint pen for writing the most important text from the design (skimped on the other details for the sake of time and my sanity). Also drew in little cupcake placeholders so the Nerds would perfectly positioned when the time was right. The cupcakes were baked one morning and decorated the next, for a grand total of about 5-6 hours. (clearly not a great business model to spend 45 minutes per cupcake but hey, this is for fun)

The cupcakes are Mexican chocolate (chocolate mix, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and tequila), and the decoration is all buttercream frosting - the faces were outlined in frosting, filled with frosting, and hot-knifed smooth; the various hairstyles were also outlined/filled/hot-knifed; the glasses were the most difficult due to their delicate nature (#1/#2 tips) and the fact that they were meant to be symmetrical - in an ideal world.

We served the cupcakes at our apartment-warming party where no one could resist the power of the nerds.
